Understanding Foot Conditions

Plantar Fasciitis & Heel Pain

Plantar fasciitis is inflammation of the plantar fascia, a thick band of tissue running across the bottom of your foot. It's one of the most common causes of heel pain, affecting millions of people each year. The condition causes stabbing pain in the heel, especially noticeable during the first steps in the morning.

Common Symptoms:
  • Severe pain in heel, especially in the morning
  • Sharp pain with first steps after rest
  • Pain that improves with movement but returns after long periods standing
  • Tightness in the heel and arch

Treatment Options: Most cases respond well to conservative treatment including rest, ice, stretching exercises, anti-inflammatory medications, night splints, and custom orthotics. More advanced options include corticosteroid injections and shock wave therapy.

Bunions

A bunion is a bony bump that forms at the base of the big toe. It develops when the big toe pushes against the next toe, forcing the joint of the big toe to get larger and stick out. Bunions can run in families and are often aggravated by tight shoes or certain activities.

Common Symptoms:
  • Large bony bump on side of big toe
  • Pain and redness at the bunion site
  • Swelling and inflammation
  • Difficulty finding comfortable shoes
  • Restricted motion of the big toe

Treatment Options: Early intervention with proper footwear, padding, and custom orthotics can slow progression. For severe cases, surgical correction offers excellent results with good pain relief and function.

Ingrown Toenails

An ingrown toenail occurs when the edge or corner of the toenail grows into the skin of the toe. This can cause pain, swelling, redness, and infection. Ingrown toenails are very treatable when addressed early by a podiatrist.

Common Symptoms:
  • Pain and tenderness at the corner of the toe
  • Redness and swelling around the toenail
  • Pus or drainage from the area
  • Warmth and inflammation
  • Difficulty walking or wearing shoes

Treatment Options: Conservative care includes proper nail trimming and hygiene. If infection develops or conservative care fails, minor surgical removal of the nail edge provides permanent relief with excellent success rates.

Fungal Toenail Infections

Fungal nail infections (onychomycosis) affect approximately 10% of the population. They cause nails to become thick, discolored, and brittle. While not immediately painful, fungal nails can become embarrassing and lead to complications if left untreated.

Common Symptoms:
  • Thick, discolored nails (white, yellow, or brown)
  • Brittle or crumbly nails
  • Nail deformity or warping
  • Foul smell
  • Mild pain or discomfort

Treatment Options: Treatment options range from topical medications to oral antifungal medications to advanced laser therapy. Early treatment offers better success rates and prevents spread to other nails.

Diabetic Foot Problems

Diabetes can cause serious foot complications including neuropathy (nerve damage), poor circulation, and increased infection risk. Regular foot care and screening are essential for preventing serious complications like ulcers and amputations.

Common Symptoms:
  • Numbness or tingling in feet
  • Poor wound healing
  • Darkening or discoloration of toes
  • Foot ulcers or sores
  • Severe pain or burning sensation

Treatment Options: Prevention is key with diabetic feet. Regular screening, proper footwear, custom orthotics, and careful monitoring prevent 80% of diabetes-related amputations. Advanced wound care can heal ulcers quickly.
